
Alhaji Yussif Sulemana, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has commended His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for his guidance in transforming the Manhyia Land Secretariat into an automated setup.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Ashanti Regional Lands Commission Board, Alhaji Sulemana praised the Asantehene’s efforts in promoting efficient land management and administration.
The Deputy Minister noted that the automated system has contributed significantly to the effective management of land records and transactions, and recommended that the system be replicated in other customary land areas.
He, therefore, recommend that the system be replicated in other customary land areas, as the Land Tenure system in the Ashanti and parts of Bono and Ahafo Regions put the region in a unique position, providing an efficient and effective land administration system that has contributed to relatively minimal land conflicts and litigation in the Region.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of the Lands Commission in the country’s development agenda, citing its role in promoting judicious land use, sustainable management principles and ecosystem maintenance.
Alhaji Sulemana expressed worry over the challenges posed by illegal mining (galamsey) in the region, which has polluted water bodies and destroyed arable farmlands. He called on the Lands Commission to work tirelessly to curb the menace.
The Deputy Minister also noted the frequent encroachments on public lands within the Kumasi Metropolis and other districts, which could compromise the execution of planned government development programmes.
He disclosed that the government has vowed to eradicate the menace of illegal mining and the Lands Commission is expected to play a pivotal role.
The Deputy Minister commended the media for taking up the challenge and urged the Commission to work with other stakeholders to address the issue.
Baffour Owusu Bediako Domeabrahene was Appointed Chairman of the Board of Ashanti Regional Lands Commission while Daasebre Kofi Asante Mensah, Prof Owusu Ansah and Mr. Peter Osei Owusu were later introduced to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene at the Manhyia palace, as the Regional House of Chiefs’ representative on the Board, Executive Secretary of the Regional Lands Commission and Officer of the Ashanti Regional Lands Commission respectively.
The Deputy Minister charged the Board to ensure efficient service delivery, advise the government, local authorities and traditional authorities on land policy frameworks and promote sustainable land management practices.
