The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has confirmed the arrest of former GIHOC Distilleries Chief Executive Officer, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah.
According to the CID boss, the arrest followed a formal petition by GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, alleging that several company vehicles had been unlawfully taken by Mr Jumah.
“Arrest warrants were properly secured and Mr Jumah was taken into custody. As of this afternoon, three of the stolen vehicles have been retrieved,” DCOP Donkor revealed, during a press briefing in Accra.
The former GIHOC Distilleries Chief Executive Officer, as at the time of going to press last night, had reportedly been granted a GHS500,000 bail.
The CID boss said this during press briefing yesterday about some significant strides made in the CID’s ongoing fight against crime, with a string of major operations that led to the arrest of high-profile suspects, the recovery of stolen assets and the rescue of dozens of victims of human trafficking.
Gold Robbery Attempt Foiled
DCOP Donkor also revealed that the Ghana Police Service successfully foiled a sophisticated gold robbery attempt involving insiders and external conspirators.
She told the press that on June 26, 2025 acting on intelligence, officers intercepted suspects who were plotting to rob a gold dealer identified as Mr. Rashid.
His driver and a man posing as his bodyguard were part of the plot. The attempted heist was planned to take place along the Accra-Akuapem Manfe road.
Police intercepted the suspects after a change in their planned route was detected. Three individuals – Kenneth Khartey, Adams Zibo and Massawud Yussif – were arrested and 1.2 kilograms of gold, valued at GH¢1,350,343.53 was recovered.
Investigations show that the suspects began planning the heist a month prior, including sourcing weapons and a getaway vehicle. The three arrested remain in custody and will be arraigned.
76 Human Trafficking Victims Rescued in QNET Scam Crackdown
In collaboration with INTERPOL and Nigerian authorities, the Ghana Police Service has also rescued 76 victims of a QNET-related human trafficking operation between May and June 2025. Seven suspects, all Ghanaians were arrested across multiple Nigerian states, including Ogun and Akwa Ibom.
The victims, many of whom were misled into believing they were being recruited for lucrative jobs or football opportunities abroad, were held in poor conditions and forced into fraudulent online schemes. Phones and documents were seized and victims were compelled to scam family members for money.
Separately, 48 foreign victims of the same scam were rescued in Ghana and repatriated. Authorities from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Guinea collaborated in these efforts.
Police emphasised that QNET’s operations resemble a Ponzi scheme and are banned in several countries, including Ghana. Legal action has already been taken against the network.
Galamsey Operation Busted
The CID boss further told the media that on June 20, 2025, police raided an illegal mining site at Akyem Amenase in the Eastern Region following a complaint by a local concession holder.
One Ghanaian national, Abdul Mumin Adams and fifteen Chinese nationals were arrested on-site.
The suspects, who entered Ghana on tourist visas, admitted they did not have permits to work. Abdul Mumin Adams reportedly facilitated their activities through a yet-to-be-arrested contact named Zhou.
All sixteen suspects were arraigned before the Koforidua Circuit Court and remanded into lawful custody pending further investigation. Police efforts to apprehend Zhou are ongoing.
The Ghana Police Service, under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Mr. Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, has reaffirmed its commitment to national security and law enforcement. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities.
“We commend all officers involved in these operations for their vigilance and professionalism,” said DCOP Donkor.
The public is advised to exercise caution, especially regarding travel offers and employment opportunities abroad, and to avoid becoming victims of scams and trafficking.
