Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has received a powerful early endorsement for his 2028 flagbearer bid, as over 60 NPP Members of Parliament called on him at his Accra office to publicly declare their unwavering support.
Although the party only recently announced that it would hold an early flagbearer election on January 31, 2026 the show of solidarity by the MPs has already positioned Dr. Bawumia as the early frontrunner.
The visit, which took place on Thursday morning, July 19, 2025 was more than a routine political courtesy; it was a strategic signal of consolidation, unity and forward planning within the NPP, as it prepares to regroup after its 2024 loss.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Dr. Bawumia expressed profound appreciation for what he described as a “strong show of support.”
He revealed that the endorsement represents over two-thirds of the NPP’s parliamentary caucus, signalling a significant shift toward continuity in leadership.
“It was a very happy visit, a courtesy call and a call to declare support for me. I’m so happy. The group that has declared support for me now amounts to over 60 Members of Parliament. And you know we have 88 MPs, so that tells you that a very significant portion of Parliament has thrown their weight behind me,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The MPs’ visit is a clear boost for the former vice president’s second shot at the presidency. Many of his supporters have argued that it is in line with party tradition to allow presidential candidates another opportunity to lead after a first unsuccessful attempt.
This early rallying around Dr. Bawumia is seen by political analysts as an attempt to build momentum and discourage fragmentation within the party.
By coalescing early around a familiar face, the MPs may be signalling a preference for unity and continuity rather than reopening a divisive leadership contest.
Yet beyond the political symbolism, Dr. Bawumia sees this endorsement as a call to action. “Off we go. There is a lot of hard work to be done to help the party and to help the country. This support is not the end. It’s the beginning of what we must now build together,” he said.
He emphasised that the MPs’ role goes beyond parliamentary duties, noting that their control over constituencies gives them a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes.
He added, “Members of Parliament, as you know, control the constituencies to a very large extent. I believe this is going to be very important for the next phase of our political journey.”
Meanwhile, the party’s decision to schedule the 2028 flagbearer election well ahead of its national executive elections is interpreted as a move to give the chosen candidate ample time to reorganise, rebuild, and rebrand the NPP for the next general elections.
With Dr. Bawumia already enjoying strong support from both MPs and grassroots members, this timeline could further entrench his dominance in the race.
