Zoomlion Ghana Limited has firmly rejected widespread reports suggesting its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) was terminated by the government, emphasising that the contract expired, not cancelled.

In a detailed press release issued following the circulation of a letter from the Office of the President, dated June 11, 2025Zoomlion clarified that the contract in question, covering the YEA’s Street Sweeping Programme, simply reached its natural expiration after a six-month extension granted beyond its original March 2024 deadline.
“The contract has, therefore, reached its natural conclusion and expired. Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government,” the company stated.
Zoomlion, a leading waste management company in Ghana, expressed concern over what it describes as “misleading interpretations” of the Presidency’s communication and emphasised that its broader partnership with the Youth Employment Agency and the government remains intact.
“It is important to note that the letter from the Presidency does not indicate a termination of Zoomlion’s other contracts or the broader YEA sanitation module,” the statement stressed.
Zoomlion has collaborated with successive governments on the YEA module for over 19 years. The company views this longstanding relationship as evidence of its commitment to Ghana’s sustainable development goals and a testament to its proven track record in delivering essential sanitation services across the country.
The company also welcomed the government’s stated intention to introduce competitive procurement processes in awarding future sanitation contracts — a position highlighted in the June 11 presidential letter. Zoomlion said it is not only open to this process, but is well-prepared to compete on the basis of its experience and capacity.
“We wish to affirm that the recently expired YEA contract was competitively procured in 2019. We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes,” Zoomlion noted.
With an unmatched nationwide footprint and operational capacity, Zoomlion reiterated its readiness to deliver even better services under new contract frameworks.
Zoomlion also used the opportunity to commend the government’s plan to improve remuneration for sanitation workers, many of whom depend on the sector for their daily livelihoods. The company emphasised its continued commitment to the welfare and dignity of these frontline workers.
“Zoomlion remains deeply committed to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for sanitation workers across the country, recognizing their vital role,” the statement said.
In recent years, sanitation workers under the YEA programme have raised concerns about low pay and job security.
Zoomlion’s endorsement of improved remuneration suggests alignment with broader calls for reform within Ghana’s sanitation sector.
Reacting to the government’s intention to audit payments and verify claims related to the expired YEA contract, Zoomlion pledged full cooperation and welcomed the exercise as a step toward transparency and efficiency.
“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” the company declared. We endorse the government’s commitment to reform and innovation within the sanitation sector.”
According to the company, accountability and improved service delivery are central to building public trust and ensuring that national resources are put to best use in the interest of citizens.
Zoomlion further disclosed that its waste management model has gained traction across Africa. The company is currently in partnership discussions with 24 African nations, with some entering into concession agreements or Memoranda of Understanding to replicate Ghana’s sanitation success story.
“This widespread continental interest underscores our role as a leading force in environmental solutions and reflects Ghana’s growing influence in shaping Africa’s green transformation agenda,” Zoomlion explained.
The sanitation giants concluded by aligning itself with the government’s “RESET” agenda under President John Dramani Mahama, which prioritises Rebuilding, Equity, Sustainability, Empowerment and Transformation. The company reaffirmed its commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana.
“Our mission continues to be intrinsically linked with national development goals and the broader aspirations of the Ghanaian people: to reset our sanitation systems, create dignified employment opportunities, protect our environment and uphold the highest standards of public service,” they concluded.
