
Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) has been declared Champions of the 6th edition of Energy Commission Senior High Schools Renewable Energy challenge in the Ashanti region, after beating Obuasi Secondary Technical (OSECTEC) to the second position.

The event was organised by the Energy Commission, in partnership with Ghana Education Service, with 10 out of 15 selected Senior High Schools in the region that applied to participate in the competition.
At the end of the challenge, Opoku Ware Senior High School was adjudged Champions with 83.3% points, with Obuasi Secondary Technical, the reigning Champions placing second with 77% points, while Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School followed with 72.2% points to grab the third place.
St. Monica’s took the fourth position with 65.2% points and Bosomtwe Girls trailing with 52.5% points. The event took place at Kumasi Technical Institute Auditorium.
Mr. Julius Nkansa Nyarko, Senior Manager, Renewable Energy Regulations, Energy Commission said the participating schools are expected to develop a project under the specified theme of the year.
According to him, the objectives of the challenge are to develop the research skills of Senior High School students and promote technological innovation in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
He indicated that the programme also aims to instil in the students a passion for solving challenges using renewable energy, clean energy, energy efficiency and climate change initiatives or methods through initiative research.
Mr. Nkansa Nyarko also stated that the programme was geared towards promoting self-confidence and encouraging hard work.
Mrs. Hannah Amponsah, Head of Inspectorate at the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate, who represented the Coordinator of Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) reiterated that the objective was to help the students move from theoretical aspect of life into technological borders through the support of the Energy Commission, in the past six years of energy renewable competition.
She expressed the view that the initiative helps the students to use available materials in their environment to solve problems in their community.
Mrs. Amponsah entreated all Headmasters and Mistresses of the various Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region to show interest and commitment to participate in the challenge, because students face challenges, including finances, when it comes to developing their projects.
