The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a scathing condemnation of what it describes as a disturbing escalation in political persecution, accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of weaponizing state security agencies to target opposition figures.
In a strongly worded statement issued today, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described the arrest of party member Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” as a “Rambo-style raid” executed by heavily armed operatives believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
According to the statement, the arrest occurred around 7:00 AM at Mr. Kumi’s residence, where masked officers wielding AK-47 rifles stormed the premises in what the party believes was a direct retaliation for Kumi’s recent petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
The petition reportedly called for the dissolution of a committee reviewing petitions related to the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
“Rather than addressing the concerns raised in the petition through due process, the response of the state has been to silence the whistleblower through intimidation and force. This is a clear affront to democratic accountability,” the NPP stated.
In a separate but related incident, the party also reported that armed officers stormed the residence of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
This, the party claims, was despite prior communication with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) indicating that Wontumi was unable to honor a summons on May 21 due to medical reasons and had rescheduled for May 26.
The NPP sees both incidents as part of a “calculated pattern of abuse of state power designed to weaken opposition voices and erode the democratic fabric of our nation.”
“These actions not only violate the fundamental rights of Ghanaian citizens but also endanger the principles of transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law,” Frimpong emphasized, calling on civil society groups, the international community, and all Ghanaians to condemn what he termed acts of “political persecution.”
As political tensions mount ahead of a crucial election year, the NPP insists that Ghana’s democracy is under threat and is urging for an immediate end to what it sees as state-sponsored intimidation.
The NDC is yet to respond to these allegations.
