The immediate past Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, says reports being attributed to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 elections as a result of arrogance of power, E-levy, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) among others have vindicated him.
Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, Eugene Boakye Antwi, who is also a former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, however, said the information that had been put in the public domain by the NPP flag bearer for the 2024 elections was nothing new, as he had echoed the warning as far back as 2022, but nobody listened to him.
“Dr Bawumia is quoted as saying that the 2024 defeat was not spiritual, but rather a consequence of high cost of living, arrogance of power, E-levy, failure to reshuffle and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). I started echoing these issues since 2022, long before defeat knocked at the party’s door in December 2024”, he told The Chronicle.
Eugene Boakye Antwi, who is aspiring to become the General Secretary of the NPP, further told The Chronicle that he had been that sole voice of reason, courageously calling for a ministerial reshuffle and urging leadership to tackle the biting economic hardships.
According to him, he went public to caution that if the party turned a blind eye to the realities on the ground, 2024 would be a painful reckoning. This observation, according to him, has now become a reality, as the party failed to win the crucial 2024 elections that would have broken the usual two terms elected political parties spend in office.
“In an interesting twist, while some party bigwigs busied themselves diagnosing the defeat with ‘mystical stethoscopes’ – yes, you read that right – Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi stayed grounded. He spoke to the suffering of Ghanaians, the frustrations of the market woman, the despair of the unemployed graduate and the silent anger swelling in communities across the nation.
“Contrast this clarity with the current General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, whose attempt to blame the party’s defeat on “spiritual causes” felt more like a desperate swing at shadows than sober political analysis. As Dr Bawumia’s statement now confirms, there was nothing ghostly about losing touch with the people”, he said.
According to the former Subin MP, it was against this backdrop that he has announced his readiness to contest for the General Secretary position of the NPP, if nominations are opened.
“I am a man of deep conviction, I believe that the only path to the party’s revival is through honest reform, grounded traditions and genuine rebuilding, not smoke and mirrors”, he said.
“As the NPP turns the corner into a new era, it might just need fewer spiritual “consultants” and more pragmatic and visionary leaders like Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, who saw the storm coming and had the guts to sound the alarm before the flood. The times demand it. NPP deserves it”, he added.
