The immediate past Minister for Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum who, according to The Chronicle intelligence, will file to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary next year, has suggested to the national executives to expand the delegates system the party is using to elect its flagbearers.
According to him, the current procedure is preventing a number of loyal party supporters from voting to elect the flagbearer and other national officers and that, the status quo must change. Speaking on Nhyira FM, a Kumasi based radio station recently, Dr Adutwum said: “there are people who have served the party faithfully and continue to support it in various ways, yet they are denied a voice in leadership selection”.
He contended that loyal party supporters should not be relegated to the background when it comes to the election of party officers simply because they are not delegates. He suggested that every card bearing member of the party should be allowed to vote in internal elections of the party.
To him, expanding the electoral base would not only enhance participatory democracy, but also reduce dissatisfaction and protests over candidate selections, as more members would be involved in making those choices.
Dr Adutwum further told his listeners that he had been contacted by the chairman of committee, tasked to probe why the NPP lost the 2024 general elections, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, and expressed hope that his suggestions would be taken seriously during the review process of the report. He did not, however, state whether his call for the expansion of the delegates was part of the discussions he had with Professor Oquaye or not.
Hereiterated the importance of including long-standing and supportive party members, especially those active at the polling station level in future electoral processes, even if they are not official delegates.
The Former Education Minister cited a situation in his constituency where certain members who have served the party in various capacities are not able to vote because they are no more in office to back his case.
He called on the massive followers of the party not to lose hope and that, NPP would bounce back stronger if the reforms he had suggested are embraced.
He insisted on party unity as leadership strives to pick up the pieces for the task ahead.
