A 41-year-old barber, Kwasi Sunday, has been granted bail by the Circuit Court in Accra after allegedly assaulting an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staff member for disconnecting his barbering shop from the national grid due to an alleged illegal connection.
Sunday, who appeared before the court presided over by His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah last week, denied all charges brought against him. The court set his bail at GH¢50,000 with one surety and adjourned the case to April 11, 2025.
Kwasi Sunday is facing the charge of Assault, illegal Interference with ECG’s distribution system and stealing.
Case Background
According to the prosecution’s brief, Iddrisu, who is stationed at ECG’s Adenta District, visited Sunday’s barbering shop in February 2025 for a routine inspection.
Upon noticing that Sunday had access to electricity, but lacked an official ECG meter, Iddrisu inquired about the matter. Sunday allegedly reacted angrily, insulted Iddrisu, and ordered him to leave the shop.
Following a report to the ECG District Manager, Iddrisu was instructed to return on March 11, 2025, and disconnect Sunday’s unauthorized power connection.
Upon arrival, Iddrisu discovered that Sunday had illegally connected his shop’s power directly from an ECG pole. When Iddrisu attempted to disconnect the connection, Sunday allegedly pushed him to the ground, causing injuries to his legs.
A formal complaint was lodged at the ECG Investigation Unit, and Iddrisu was issued a police medical form for treatment at Shai-Osudoku District Hospital.
After receiving medical attention, he returned with a duly endorsed medical form. Sunday was subsequently arrested and, during police investigations, denied all allegations.
After investigations, Sunday was formally charged and arraigned before the Circuit Court. The trial is set to continue on April 11, 2025.
