A former Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Yaw Owusu Obimpeh on Tuesday secured 49 votes to be elected the Ashanti Regional representative on the Council of State.
He beat his closest contender, Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, Agric Nzemahene in Kumasi, who polled 35 votes in a re-run of elections, which turned chaotic last week Tuesday.

The other contestants were; Rose Hamilton, Frederick Adjei, Nana Yaw Akuoko, Alexander Nti, Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV, Nana Kusi Ampofoh II, Angel Yirenkyi, Nana Adwoa Foriwaa, Queen mother of Nsuta Fuaman Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region and Daniel Anarfi Yeboah, Bismark Adjei.
Eighty five out of 86 voters from 43 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti region, constituting the Electoral College, cast their votes at the elections held at the Prempeh Assembly Hall under tight security and heavy police presence, as hundreds of police personnel, along with crowd control equipment were deployed to the venue.
All persons were subjected to strict security scrutiny at different points at the venue of the elections.
The Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Francis Osei Nsiah, explained that the EC has had to re-run the election for the selection of the Ashanti region’s representative to the Council of State, following a violent disruption of the original voting process last week. The disruption was caused by machomen who invaded the voting centre at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council whilst the ballots were being sorted out. They violently attacked people, including the election officials and journalists, and destroyed the ballot papers.
