Brigadier General E Aggrey-Quashie, Director General for Publication Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has said his outfit and the Ghana Police Service are investigating the circumstances that led to some residents staging an attack on the Eastern Naval Command and the Biekro barracks at Tema Newtown.
The first attack happened at about 7.53 pm, Friday, April 12, this year, when a Naval vehicle was attacked and damaged by some irate youth who were celebrating the annual Kplejoo traditional festival of the people of Tema Newtown.
Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie said three Navy personnel onboard the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to the Naval Base Medical Centre.
“In the course of the confrontation, the Naval personnel arrested three suspects and handed them to the Tema Newtown District Police Command,” he authored in a release to the media.
He said a mob, suspected to be part of the celebrants, later attacked the Base, throwing stones and other implements in a bid to get the three suspects released.
Sensing that the mob attack could affect the sensitive installations and the security of the Base, he said warning shots were fired to repel the attack.
“It was later reported by the police that two dead civilians were brought to the Tema General Hospital. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained,” he said.
Then, on Saturday, April 13, 2024 Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie said the mob attacked the Naval Base and Biekro Naval Barracks, destroying several properties.
While he, on behalf of GAF, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie further called for sobriety by all parties while investigations are carried out.
