The farming community of Woroworoso in the Amansie Central District of Ashanti region was yesterday thrown into a state of mourning, following the untimely death of a 15-year-old JHS 2 student of the town.
The galamsey pit in which Kojo Opoku was working caved in, killing him instantly around 6:30 am Thursday morning.
Members of the entire Woroworoso community as well as school mates of the deceased wailed uncontrollably over his death. Nana Kwame Tannor, Odikro of the town, who described the incident as very unfortunate, told The Chronicle that the galamsey site was previously owned by some Chinese nationals but has now been taken over by the youth of the town when the Chinese were driven away by the National anti-galamsey Task Force early this year.
The mother of the deceased, Yaa Abrafi, in tears, said she saw her son early in the morning only to be told less than an hour later that he had died at the galamsey site.
Kojo Opoku’s Head teacher, Mr. Prince Aboagye, who seriously regretted the death of Opoku, described the boy as a potential footballer, and said he has warned his students on countless occasions to stop going to the galamsey site.
At the time of filing the report, the body of the deceased had been picked by the Jacobu Police for preservation and autopsy.
