The Vice President of the Bono Chapter of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), Madam Sirina Mahamadu, has called for employment equity for the Federation’s members in private institutions.
She expressed regret that the private sector companies in the country are reluctant to employ its members, although most of them are qualified for the available jobs.
She said members of the Federation are shortchanged when it comes to employment in the private sector, hence, the need for the introduction of an employment equity policy to ensure that all companies reserve a quota of recruitments for people living with disabilities (PWDs).
“The employment rate for PWDs in the country is very low, hence, there is the need for the government to take action,” she said.
Ms Mahamadu indicated that although the private companies have been trained in handling PWD employees, they refuse to offer them employment.
