The 20-seater WC
The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) will soon come out with Social Interventions for Mining Affected Communities (SIMAC) to create economic activities for disadvantaged youth in such mining communities.
The Administrator of the MDF, Dr. Norris Hammah, who said this at the commissioning of an MDF funded GH¢323,000.00 20-seater water closet (WC) toilet facility with showers at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, noted that the SIMAC project, when implemented, would benefit, at least, 10,000 youth in identified mining communities.

Dr Norris Hammah addressing the gathering
Dr. Hammah said the SIMAC project would increase incomes and savings, and create new job opportunities for the youth, thereby providing them an alternate source of livelihoods and deter them from engaging in illegal mining.
The MDF Administrator encouraged people who are still engaged in illegal mining to desist from the practice and rather take advantage of this important initiative when it is rolled out.
He charged the Akrofuom Local Management Committee (LMC) of the MDF and the Assembly to ensure that the toilet facility is properly maintained, and gave the assurance that many projects, which will be spearheaded by the LMC, would be implemented for the direct benefit of the people of the area.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Maurice Jonas Woode, noted that the facility would help stop open defecation, hence, the decision of the LMC of the MDF to put up the ultra-modern toilet for the community.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akrofuom, Mr. Alex Blankson, appealed to the management of the MDF to consider increasing the percentage given to the LMC to enable it bring development to many communities in the district.
Nana Asare Bediako, Ahenemahene of Akrofuom and Chairman of the LMC, who chaired the function, commended the management of the Fund for supporting the LMC to put up the facility. He also called for more funds from the MDF to enable the LMC initiate more projects to improve the living standard of the people.
