The Cape Coast North Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Stephen Kojo Arhin, says President Akufo-Addo must consult widely before making appointments into his new government.
This, according to Mr Arhin, would ensure that only members with foreknowledge on how the party was ran at the grassroots level would be considered for appointments.
Speaking to the media in Cape Coast, he posited that some appointees in the previous administration either neglected the party or did not have any ideas for grassroots members.
“We fought hard to bring the party to power in 2016, and some got appointments to serve, but what did they do to develop and hold the party together at the grassroots?” he queried.
According to him, the party would have won last year’s elections hands down with an overwhelming majority in Parliament if all functionaries had put their shoulders to the wheel.
“President Akufo-Addo has worked tremendously since he assumed office, and, therefore, needed heavy endorsement from the electorates, but some of the appointees let us down,” he explained.
Though he did not mention specific names, he was emphatic that some of the appointees in the first administration of Nana Addo did not help his cause.
“Going forward, all chairmen must broadly be consulted before certain individuals are given appointments by the President,” he proposed.
“I believe strongly that all appointments should be based on who loves the party and wants to serve, rather than who the party loves,” Mr Arhin added.
In his view, the loyalty of all appointees to the party at the lower levels would determine the party’s chances in the next general elections in 2024.
President Nana Akufo-Addo was officially sworn in to begin his second term in office last week.
As constitutionally established, President Nana Akufo-Addo would be required to appoint ministers and their deputies who would serve in his yet-to-be formed government.
However, lobbying for positions have started already, as some groups within the party have started touting the credentials of their preferred candidates. These are part of schemes to get their favourites appointed to positions to serve in the new government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the next four years.
