The Paramount Chief of Kenyasi Number One in Ahafo Region, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri II, has warned his sub-chiefs and residents of his community to stay away from illegal mining (galamsey) in order to avoid incurring his wrath.
Addressing the sub-chiefs, clergy, assembly members, youth leaders and residents at a meeting at his palace, he stated that any sub-chief or resident found guilty of the said practice would be de-stooled and handed over to the law enforcement agencies.
According to Nana Osei Kofi Abiri II, who is also the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs Vice President, he had visited parts of his traditional area where illegal mining was still rampant and was shocked to see the massive way the environment had been degraded.
He, therefore, charged the police to team up with the Traditional Council to apprehend people, irrespective of gender, nationality, profession, position among others, who are involved in galamsey. To him, what was happening in his community goes contrary to the war that has been declared on illegal mining by the President.
The Asutifi North and South District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Paul Ankan, in his address, thanked the traditional leader for alerting and involving the police in what was happening which is a clear violation of the law. “Some opinion leaders are obstacles to the fight, but I can assure you that the police will crash them very soon,” DSP Ankan warned.
Chief Inspector Akowuah Sankara of the Kenyasi Police Command promised that the police would arrest owners of lands where illegal mining was ongoing, just like those on the field perpetrating the illegal act.
According to him, the residents must not entertain the practice because of the numerous negative effects it brings on them.
He said, henceforth, the police would monitor residents with keen interest to apprehend those who would engage in the act.
