The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said he would be interested with accolades being heaped on him concerning his approach towards the fight against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) only if the disease is defeated in Ghana.
“Until the disease goes, I am not that interested in the awards. If we kick the virus out of Ghana with no active case in our country, that is where I will be happy, but, until that time, even if there is a single active case in Ghana, I cannot presume that the fight against the pandemic is over.”
The President made these remarks when he granted an interview to Kumasi-based Opemsuo FM, which is located at the official seat of the Golden Stool – Manhyia Palace – as part of his ‘Appreciation Visit’ to the Ashanti Region.
Quizzed about the current composition of Parliament, Akufo-Addo told the listeners that when leaders of both sides in Parliament sat down and realised what was at play in the House, they built a consensus that Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin should be made the Speaker of Parliament.
According to him, the consensus was that two deputies must come from different parties and that it cannot be a one party affair, the reason why Mr. Asiamah of Fomena had to be made the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Expressing his candid opinion about the current composition of Parliament, which is historic in the annals of the Fourth Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo explained: “I for one perceive this development to be a good sign, in the sense that the two sides are prepared to sit down together and find a way to develop Ghana. When [an] issue crops up, we will all sit down and find [an] antidote to it.”
According to the President, many Ghanaians do not know the nature of work in Parliament and that sometimes the legislators build consensus on critical bills, and this is what he expects to happen in this current Parliament. “In every occasion, consultations on both sides will be the way forward, and I believe this will work out,” he said.
Touching on the plans the government had for the Ashanti Region, Akufo-Addo noted that prior to the elections, his administration started the Boankra inland project, which, upon completion, would transformation the Ashanti Region.
He also revealed that the forty-five year old Children and Maternity Block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) would be completed for the people to benefit.
The President further announced that there were other projects such as interchanges which would be constructed in the region when his cabinet is constituted.
On issues about education, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo told the listeners that this year, Senior High School (SHS) One students would not go through the double track system, stressing that the only students who would be attending school based on the double track system were the SHS Two students.
According to him, the idea was that by time they complete, the double track would have been phased out and the entire SHS would be a single track system.
