When 35-year-old Amuzu Patience went into labour at the St Anthony Hospital at Dzodze in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region on October 13, 2019 and delivered triplets, there was joy in his immediate family. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived, after the same hospital detected a few weeks later that one of the kids had hole-in-heart.
She and her husband, Akakpo Peter, a farmer, were immediately asked to proceed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for prompt medical attention.
According to Akakpo, this is where his nightmare began.
He told The Chronicle that he and the wife already have four kids, and that taking care of them and the triplets had become a herculean task for him.
What has even exacerbated the situation, Mr Akakpo Peter told The Chronicle, was the detection that one of the kids has hole-in-heart.
According to him, he was now swimming in debts and has no idea as to how he was going to retire them.
He revealed that every month he borrows GH¢9 million to shuttle between Ave-Dakpa, his hometown, and the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for the hole-in-heart child to be attended to.
According to him, as farmer who depends on rainfall for his farming activities, he does not earn even a quarter of the GH¢9 million each month. With tears streaming down his face, Akapko Peter, who is popularly known in his community as Ganyo, said his family would have come in and help, but they too simply do not have the resources to take care of the child with hole-in-heart.
He further told The Chronicle that doctors at the Cardiothoracic Centre of Korle Bu had told him that the date to operate on the child would be made known to him in March next year.
The doctors have also told him that the government would absorb half of the cost involved in the operation, with the remaining half being borne by him.
He wonders how he is going to raise the remaining half of the money for the operation to take place.
Akakpo is, therefore, appealing to the general public to help him raise the funds for doctors at Korle Bu to operate on his daughter.
