The Coalition of Muslim Institutions (COMI) in Kumasi has expressed shock at the sudden demise of the founder the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and founder of the 4th Republic of Ghana, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings last week Thursday.
COMI in a statement expressed its sincere condolence to the former First Lady Nana and the children, as well as the family.
The statement issued by Chief Azumah Ndagu Edward, Chief of Kusasi Community/Ashanti Region and Executive Director of COMI described the late former President Rawlings as
a man with a clean heart and mind who dedicated his whole life not to his selfish aggrandizement and gains but put Ghana first, just like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory.
The COMI, which is made up of two registered NGOs, Aid to the Vulnerable Foundation (AIDVU) and Muslim Family Counseling Services (MFCS), in partnership with Office of Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Council of Ulamau and Imams, Sarkin Zongo Palace, Kumasi, Council of Zongo Chiefs, Ashanti Region and Muslim executive Forum observed that violence in Ghanaian politics, as elsewhere on the African continent, appears to be the surface expressions of more profound structural difficulties pertaining to such issues as ethnocentrism, political polarisation, exclusionary politics, multiple and competing centers of authority (traditional / modern), youth unemployment and inadequate state capacity.
While formal and informal institutions, which are indispensable for managing these difficulties, continue to develop at a fairly steady pace, they still find it difficult to respond effectively to the challenges being encountered.
The group condemned vigilantism noting that the quest for political power is gradually making the use of vigilante groups a part of Ghanaian politics and unfortunately eating fast and deep into the democratic fabrics of the country.
It said the group will come together and embark on a sensitization exercise beginning with Asawasi in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to undertake intensive community education on vigilantism to avoid the destruction of the youth, being the key human resource for national development.
COMI also urged all political parties and Ghanaians as a whole to collectively make the December 7, 2020 elections a zero-violence free election, an achievement which His Excellency Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings established and managed to sustain even after his tenure of office.
