Concerned Youth of Amoaman in the Nwabiagya North District of Ashanti region have appealed to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene and stop encroachers from encroaching on the Amoadom Lands and the forest to save the Barekese Dam.
The Amoadom lands and the forest are allegedly being encroached upon by the chiefs and their subjects at the expense of the Barekese Dam, which serves as a source of water supply to Kumasi and its environs.
Mr. Gideon Kwame Okyere Afram, the Secretary to the group, explained at a press conference that the Amoadom land was gifted to Amoaman as a result of the selfless service by their forefathers to the Asantehene.
According to him, one of the chiefs with the alleged approval of his superior has also started demarcating the land into plots for sale.
The spokesman disclosed that the forest reserve protecting the Barekese Dam has been deforested by the said chief by cultivating them into cocoa farms.
He said since Barekese Dam supplies potable water for domestic and industrial purposes to the Asante Kingdom and its environs, they will resist further attempts to destroy the forest land and protect the Barekese Dam.
The youth have, therefore, petitioned Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, as a follow up to previous petition to Nana Agyenim Boateng, Amoamanhe and the Member of Parliament, Mr. Benito Owusu Bio, who is a Deputy Minister for Lands to stamp their authority against the encroachment of the said lands, towards saving the Barekese Dam.
