The Eastern Regional Correspondent of The Chronicle Newspaper, Mr. Isaac Akwetey-Okunor, has been presented with a prestigious award by ‘As I Grow’ (AIG), a Larteh-Akuapem Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), for his immense humanitarian works, especially for the less privileged in society.
The Larteh-Akuapem-based NGO that seeks to help the less privileged in very deprived rural communities in and outside Ghana, on Saturday, presented the award to the reporter at a mini fundraising for 2021 advocacy work and donations to missionaries at Larteh.
In a citation read by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NGO, Mr. Isaac Debrah Bekoe, he stated: “We (As I Grow), as an organisation, are grateful for your wonderful support to us.
We appreciate all the support you have rendered to facilitate our advocacy work over the years in the area of your accurate, relentless and outstanding publications. More grace, blessings and good health to you and your family.”
Receiving the award, the reporter expressed profound gratitude to the management of the NGO, and called on other people to emulate the kind gesture, while charging Ghanaians to honour deserving people when alive.
According to Mr. Akwetey-Okuonr: “I am overwhelmed with this gesture and least expected it since it is my duty as a journalist to inform, entertain, educate and galvanise the people towards accelerated development.”
He continued: “Helping the NGO through various publications with the aim to help elevate the problems of the less advantaged in society falls within the ambit of the core mandate of journalists.”
To this end, he mentioned that he did not expect anybody to award him or encourage him to carry out his core mandate as a journalist, a reason he found the award very exciting and highly valued, “an indication that our work is carefully monitored.”
