United States President Donald Trump has assured that Iran will be permitted to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite escalating hostilities between the two nations.
Relations between Washington and Tehran have deteriorated sharply following the latest military escalation, widely referred to as Operation Epic Fury, which began on February 28. The region has seen increased strikes and retaliatory actions in recent weeks.
However, Trump made it clear that football will not become a casualty of geopolitics.
The assurance was revealed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino following a meeting with Trump to discuss preparations for the tournament, now just 93 days away.
Posting on Instagram, Infantino shared details of their conversation.
"We also spoke about the current situation in Iran and the fact that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026," Infantino wrote.
"During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States."
Infantino also stressed the unifying power of football amid global tensions.
"We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever. Football unites the world."
Iran have qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico. The assurance ensures their participation will proceed despite the political backdrop.
