Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has declared that his team's mission at the 2026 World Cup extends beyond participationâthey intend to make the nation known on football's biggest stage.
Speaking to FIFA ahead of the tournament, which Panama will enter for only the second time in their history, Christiansen outlined his ambitions for a group that includes England, Croatia, and Ghana.
"We want to go toe to toe with them and put Panama on the map," he said.
The Danish-Spanish tactician, the longest-serving coach in Panama's history, believes his side has progressed beyond simply making up the numbers. He pointed to recent results against regional powerhouses as evidence of their growth.
"Over the last five years, we've managed to hold our own against the big boys, and we're no longer outclassed by Canada, Mexico and the USA. We've come out on top against the USA several times, and we'd like to replicate that success against Ghana, Croatia and England."
Christiansen also raised expectations for what should constitute success, urging fans to demand more than moral victories.
"Scoring a consolation goal should no longer be a reason for Panamanians to celebrate. It's time for us to up our game."
Panama will open their campaign against Ghana before facing Croatia and England. For Christiansen and his players, the goal is clear: make the world take notice.
