Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially declared his commitment to represent Austria at the international level.
The decision makes the 22-year-old eligible to feature for Austria in their upcoming international friendly against Ghana’s Black Stars scheduled for March 27.
Chukwuemeka, who is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea, previously represented England at the youth level before opting to switch his international allegiance to Austria.
Although he was born in Vienna to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka moved to England with his family at a young age. He later progressed through England’s youth national teams, representing the country from the Under-17 level through to the Under-21 side.
So far this season, Chukwuemeka has made 30 appearances across all competitions, recording three goals and two assists.
Before confirming his decision to play for Austria, the midfielder was eligible to represent Nigeria and England. His choice now places him in contention to feature for Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, he must consistently perform at Dortmund and show his quality to earn a place in the Austria squad.
Austria have been placed in Group J for the upcoming tournament alongside Jordan, Algeria and defending champions Argentina.
