Former Black Stars defender Samuel Inkoom has backed the Ghana Football Association's decision to strengthen the backroom staff of the senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The GFA last month announced five new faces who will join the technical team. French coach Alain Ravera and Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren have joined as assistant coaches, while Spanish strategist Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso has been brought in to bolster scouting and match analysis.
Carlos Lozano Romero returns as the team’s physiotherapist after his role at the 2022 World Cup, and British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi completes the revamped setup.
The decision has sparked widespread debate across Ghana, with fans and pundits weighing in on whether the changes will strengthen the team’s chances at the global showpiece.
However, Inkoom believes the move signals serious intent and proper planning by the football authorities.
Speaking to Connect FM, the former defender commended both the GFA and the Sports Ministry for what he describes as thorough pre-tournament preparation.
“The pre-tournament preparation by the GFA and the Sports Ministry has been great. The new addition to the technical team is a good one. Football is all about preparation, and I am happy we are preparing well,” Inkoom said.
According to Inkoom, success at the World Cup goes beyond talent on the pitch.
He stressed the importance of tactical analysis and proper scouting of opponents, noting that modern football demands detailed preparation.
“If you’re going to the World Cup without properly monitoring your opponents, the tournament will be very difficult for you, and you won’t enjoy the tournament.”
The Black Stars, who are making their fifth appearance at the Mundial have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. They kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
As part of their preparations, Ghana will regroup in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up match against Mexico in May.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that the team will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the tournament.
