1978 Africa Cup of Nations champion Mohammed Polo has expressed sharp criticism of the current standard of the Ghana Premier League.
Polo, who recently watched the high-profile Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium, described the league as lacking quality.
He singled out Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the only local player deserving a spot in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America this summer.
“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup," Polo told Connect FM.
“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.
“Despite the red card Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant in the game, and all went down to quality,” he added.
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is scheduled to announce the final squad for the World Cup on June 1.
