Former Black Stars midfielder and 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner Willie Klutse has delivered a powerful message to Ghana's young footballers chasing dreams abroad: know your purpose, and never lose sight of it.
Speaking to Citi Sports in the wake of reports that Thomas Partey has been charged with two additional counts of rape, Klutse urged the next generation to stay grounded and intentional about their careers.
'They have to know what they want out of football," Klutse said emphatically.
The 1978 AFCON winner stressed that football is not just about talentâit is about focus, discipline, and understanding the sacrifices made to get to the top.
"You have a reason why you want to play football, and based on it, you have travelled outside the country. Just keep your focus. When they advise you and you can't take it, why should we invest in your time and your career?"
Klutse also reminded young players that a career at the highest level is temporaryâand that planning for life after football is just as important as success on the pitch.
"Football â the latest is 15 years; you are finished with football. Serious and active football for 15 years â you can't be the same. So, they have to keep their focus and know what they want out of football."
Partey, 32, now faces trial in November 2026 after being charged with two additional counts of rape, bringing the total number of complainants to four. His lawyer has stated that he denies all charges and has cooperated with authorities throughout.
The midfielder remains eligible for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana will face England in the group stage. Legal proceedings in the UK are ongoing.
