Former Hearts of Oak Managing Director, Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, believes sports must be recognised as a strategic growth sector that can help accelerate Ghana’s national development agenda.
Speaking at the Volta Sports Development Forum, the Ghana Football Association's head of Public Relations and Strategy outlined the wide economic benefits the industry offers, well beyond the pitch.
“Sport today is a multi-billion-dollar industry,” he said. “Football alone employs millions worldwide: players, coaches, analysts, physiotherapists, content creators, nutritionists, data scientists, and marketers.”
He argued that regions such as Ho, Hohoe, Kpando and Sogakope have the potential to become hubs of sporting excellence with year-round economic activity.
“A thriving sports economy contributes directly to the 24-hour economy vision,” he noted. “Sporting facilities can run morning to night; gyms and recreation centres operate full-time; media coverage, merchandising and sports tourism thrive continuously.”
He commended the Volta Region’s sporting legacy and called for greater infrastructure investment to unlock its full potential.
