Asante Kotoko return to the road this weekend with a testing trip to Samreboi, where they face Samartex at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Sunday after completing successive home fixtures.
Kotoko closed the gap on the league leaders to two points on Wednesday after a late Samba O’Neil penalty sealed a 2-1 win over Young Apostles. That result followed a frustrating draw against Aduana FC. Had they won both matches, Kotoko would have travelled to Samreboi as table-toppers, but they can still climb to the summit depending on results elsewhere.
Their inconsistency remains a concern. Kotoko have struggled to maintain momentum, producing strong performances in tough fixtures yet unexpectedly dropping points when widely tipped to win. Coach Karim Zito has repeatedly urged the squad to avoid complacency as they pursue their first league title since 2022.
They will need one of their best performances on Sunday, because Samartex remain formidable at home. The former champions are seventh and three points behind Kotoko, and have been outstanding at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, recording four wins and a draw in five matches.
Recent meetings favour Kotoko, who have four wins from the last six encounters. Their last clash, in March, ended 1-1.
This season, Samartex have recorded four wins, four draws and two defeats from 10 matches, scoring eight goals and conceding seven. Kotoko remain the league’s only unbeaten side after playing nine matches, with five wins and four draws, scoring 11 and conceding four.
Samartex are coming off a defeat to Bechem United, while Kotoko arrive buoyed by their midweek victory, setting up a compelling contest in Samreboi.
