Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivered a standout performance for the Black Stars in their 1-0 loss to South Korea on Tuesday at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, making a strong case for the starting spot ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Asare missed Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup after arriving late to camp. Many had questioned whether he could handle pressure against top sides, arguing he hadn’t faced stronger opposition during the World Cup qualifiers.
Tuesday’s game provided that test, and he did not disappoint. The 33-year-old made several crucial saves, including a penalty stop, keeping Ghana competitive throughout the match.

His confident handling, quick reflexes, and command of the penalty area offered reassurance to coach Otto Addo, particularly with key defenders absent, including Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku.
Even though the Black Stars fell short, Asare’s display confirmed his readiness for the number one role as Ghana prepares for the World Cup.
With the team still missing several stars and adjusting tactics during the Asian tour, Asare’s performance stood out as a bright spot. His consistent form gives the Black Stars a reliable presence in goal as they finalise their squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the group-stage draw set for December 5.
