English-Ghanaian defender Jarell Quansah scored a crucial goal as Bayer Leverkusen battled past Paderborn 4â2 after extra time in the DFB Pokal Round 2 clash at the Home Deluxe Arena.
Quansah, who came on in the 66th minute to replace Jeanuël Belocian, made his mark in the 105th minute, tapping home from close range after Ernest Poku’s clever assist to level the game 2â2. His goal lifted Leverkusen’s confidence as they pushed for victory in the thrilling extra-time encounter.
Earlier, Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the 60th minute before Stefano Marino and Sven Michel turned the game around for Paderborn. But Leverkusen refused to give up, with young forward Ibrahim Maza netting twice in stoppage time (120+2’, 120+4’) to seal a hard-fought win for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Quansah’s composed performance and timely goal earned him praise from fans, proving his growing importance to the team.
Bayer Leverkusen now shift focus to their Bundesliga showdown against Bayern Munich on November 1.
