Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has urged Ghanaians to adopt a measured and thoughtful approach when discussing foreign-born players who have recently shown interest in representing the Black Stars.
Following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, several players of Ghanaian descent, including Eddie Nketiah, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Francis Amuzu, have reportedly expressed willingness to switch nationality and don the national colours.
Their renewed interest, however, has sparked debate among fans and pundits. While some have welcomed the development as a boost to Ghana’s squad depth, others have dismissed the players as “opportunists”, accusing them of showing up only after the team’s success.
Adding to the discourse, GFA President Kurt Okraku recently stressed that players who previously declined invitations to play for Ghana would not be reconsidered for future call-ups.
But Minister Kwakye Ofosu, who also serves as the Minister for Government Communication, believes the issue requires level-headedness rather than emotional reactions.
“I call for some caution in the way that we approach this matter," he said.
"It is true that there were some players who rebuffed our entreaties in the past, but there are areas in the team that require some improvement, and therefore, I will call for sober reflection on this matter.
"If we are not careful and we act out of emotion, we may make mistakes that will come back to haunt us," he added.
The Black Stars are set to return to action in November, with friendly matches against Japan and South Korea as part of their Asian tour. Ghana will also discover their 2026 World Cup group-stage opponents on December 5.
