Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford shared his excitement on Friday afternoon after leading the team to thump Basake Holy Stars 3-0 in the Ghana Premier League.
Speaking after the match, the experienced coach stressed that his side was determined to secure the big win to prove to the opponent that they are better than them.
“This is exactly what we wanted. We know how we suffered in their hands when we went there the last time. We were determined that when they come here, we have to pay them back. We wanted to prove to them that we are the better side, and that is exactly what we did,” Bashir Hayford said.
After suffering their first defeat of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season against Bibiani GoldStars last weekend, Heart of Lions produced a commanding performance to maintain their perfect home record this term.
Lions took control of proceedings early on, creating several openings before finally breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute.
Michael Ephson’s low strike came off the post, and Kwadwo Obeng Junior reacted quickest to slot home the rebound for the opener.
Ephson, who had been lively throughout the first half, was rewarded for his efforts just before the break, doubling the advantage with a composed finish to put the hosts firmly in control at halftime.
The second half saw the visitors push forward in search of a response, but their lack of cutting edge once again proved costly.
Substitute Anthony Owusu put the icing on the cake with a sensational strike from his own half to make it 3-0, sealing a comprehensive win for Lions.
Following the dominant triumph today, Heart of Lions have temporarily moved to first in the Ghana Premier League standings, pending the rest of the league matches to be played during the weekend.
