Napoli are reportedly on the verge of securing a loan deal for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Ruben Amorim.
The 20-year-old Ghanaian-English star, born in Stockport to Ghanaian parents, has found himself struggling for playing time since Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford.
Despite his early promise, Mainoo has fallen down the pecking order, prompting growing interest from clubs across Europe.
According to reports from Fichajes, Napoli are “very close” to reaching an agreement for the England international as the Italian champions look to strengthen their midfield options in January.
The move would provide Mainoo with the regular game time he has been denied under Amorim, who has reportedly informed the youngster he is free to leave when the transfer window opens.
Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has been monitoring Mainoo’s situation for weeks, and discussions are said to be advancing quickly.
The Serie A giants have previously benefitted from signing former United players, including Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlundânow thriving under Antonio Conte.
Mainoo has managed just five substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and is believed to be frustrated by his lack of opportunities.
The Mirror further reports that the midfielder has hired a personal trainer and replaced his chef in a bid to improve his form and readiness for a new challenge.
A move to Napoli could provide the perfect platform for Mainoo to reignite his development and showcase the potential that once made him one of Manchester United’s brightest prospects.
The deal, if completed, would mark another high-profile English talent seeking revival in Serie A.
