Derrick Kohn has firmly secured his spot in Union Berlin’s starting lineup and will start again versus Werder Bremen this Friday night.
Coach Steffen Baumgart confirmed at the pre-match press conference that Kohn’s reliability and adaptability have been crucial, especially given injuries and suspensions on the left.
Baumgart explained, “We had a personnel situation on the position that he filled very well. Then he played well and had deficits from preseason, that's why he was substituted last match. Derrick is getting into the shape you need for the wide role.”
Baumgart stressed the importance of Kohn’s fitness: “There’s a big difference if you can run forward three times or six, seven times. That’s where we see him improving. And when he does make those runs, he does it very well.” The coach added, “For us, it’s important that he keeps improving physically. That’s the main reason he’s been playing well and will play again, even though we don’t like to talk about lineups. But this is a secret that’s no secret.”
Since his summer transfer from Galatasaray for â¬4 million, Kohn has quickly established himself in Baumgart’s system, gaining a real edge in the squad’s competition for the position.
