Birkirkara FC are banking on the experience of newly signed Ghanaian forward Asumah Abubakar-Ankrah as they prepare for a decisive run of fixtures in the Maltese Premier League.
The Stripes, currently sixth with 13 points from eight matches, trail leaders Floriana by six points and are seeking greater attacking consistency to close the gap.
The club confirmed Abubakar’s arrival this week, describing him as the ideal reinforcement following the long-term injury of Nigerian striker Franklin Sasere, whose absence has left a void in their frontline.
“Asumah is a dynamic center-forward known for his pace, strength, and intelligent movement inside the box. His ability to hold up play and finish clinically with both feet provides a fresh attacking option following the unfortunate long-term injury of Franklin Sasere,” Birkirkara said in a statement.
The 28-year-old forward, who also holds a Portuguese passport, arrives with a wealth of international experience, having featured in the Netherlands and Switzerland before a recent stint with Brisbane Roar in Australia’s A-League.
Club officials believe his exposure across several competitive leagues will bring maturity and leadership to a side aiming to reassert itself among the title challengers.
“We would like to welcome Asumah while wishing him all the best of luck in his experience with our club,” the statement concluded.
