Black Stars head coach Otto Addo believes Ghana’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was partly due to a calmer and more focused atmosphere during the campaign.
After the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Addo has redeemed himself by guiding the national team to a place at the global showpiece. The Black Stars sealed qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Speaking to the media after the game, Addo reflected on the differences between the two qualification journeys.
“To say it very simply, we scored more goals [in the World Cup qualifiers than the AFCON qualifiers], we were more mature, we were more clinical in our finishes," he said.
“There were less distractions also, but I do think we’ve now come together as a united team. If you have unity, everything is easy,” the 49-year-old added.
At 49, Addo has etched his name in history as the first coach to lead the Black Stars to consecutive World Cup tournaments, having also taken charge during the 2022 edition in Qatar.
Ghana, set for its fifth World Cup appearance, will learn its group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on December 5.
