Bibiani GoldStars CEO Akwasi Adu has defended the club's controversial decision to part ways with title-winning coach Frimpong Manso by drawing parallels with high-profile dismissals in world football, notably referencing José Mourinho's past sackings.
In an exclusive interview with Akoma 87.9 FM, Adu responded to criticism of the timing of Manso's departure - just months after guiding the club to their first-ever Ghana Premier League title - by emphasizing the unpredictable nature of football management.
"Even José Mourinho was sacked, so how much more Frimpong Manso?" Adu questioned, using the example of the renowned Portuguese manager's various dismissals to justify GoldStars' decision.
The CEO stressed that no coach's position is ever completely secure, regardless of past achievements. Manso had transformed GoldStars from relegation contenders to champions during his two-season tenure, securing historic continental qualification in the process.
Adu maintained that the decision was necessary despite Manso's success, hinting at deeper organizational issues. "The decision to part ways with Coach Frimpong Manso goes beyond football," he stated, suggesting philosophical differences in the club's direction.
The CEO also dismissed suggestions that the recent 2-0 CAF Confederation Cup defeat to JS Kabylie influenced the timing, stating unequivocally that the club's leadership had been considering the move independently of continental results.
The justification highlights the increasingly ruthless nature of football management, where even the most successful coaches face uncertainty if their vision diverges from the club's hierarchy.
GoldStars now begin their search for a new manager who can build on Manso's legacy while aligning with the club's long-term direction.
