Black Stars coach Otto Addo hails leadership role of Jordan Ayew and senior players

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has underscored the importance of leadership within his squad ahead of Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Addo praised captain Jordan Ayew for his influence on and off the pitch, stressing that the Leicester City forward’s experience is vital to guiding the team through challenging moments.

“In general, we have different kinds of leaders. It’s important that our captain, Jordan [Ayew], is there and addresses the team on the pitch. He has the experience also. This is what I need also from him,” Addo said.

The Ghana coach also pointed to the roles of senior players such as Thomas Partey and Alexander Djiku, describing them as equally essential in pushing the team during critical phases of matches.

“We need leaders on the pitch who can also push the players on the field, in each and every action, especially when the last minutes arrive. So, it’s always good to have a lot of leaders, like Jordan, like Thomas, like Djiku, on the pitch,” he added.

Ghana leads Group I with 16 points, but the Black Stars must overcome Mali to keep their hopes of a fifth FIFA World Cup qualification firmly in their own hands.
