The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, led a delegation to Jubilee House to present the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama.
The ceremony was attended by key sports figures, including Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, National Sports Authority (NSA) Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, and representatives of Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics.
The second edition of the Democracy Cup is set for September 5 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where Hearts of Oak will lock horns with Great Olympics.
Launched in 2024 as a parliamentary initiative, the Democracy Cup seeks to promote civic engagement and national unity through football.
The inaugural tournament, held on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko edge Hearts of Oak 2-1 to claim the first-ever trophy.
Emerging as a prominent fixture on Ghana’s football calendar, the Democracy Cup celebrates the country’s democratic progress while highlighting the unifying power of sport.
The GFA has announced that the winner of the 2025 edition will earn the opportunity to compete in a three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026.
