Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has described the Democracy Cup as a vital initiative that reflects Ghana’s democratic progress and warned citizens never to take the country’s stability for granted.
He stressed that football’s power to unite people makes the competition an ideal platform to celebrate peace and national cohesion.
The President of the Ga Traditional Council made these remarks when organisers of the annual game paid a courtesy call on him at his palace in Accra on Friday, August 29, 2025.
He commended Parliament and the Speaker for introducing the tournament, which he said was helping to bring Ghanaians from different backgrounds together.
“We should not take our democracy for granted, and I believe that it is a great initiative from the Members of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament that you lead and seek to bring all people in Ghana together,” King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II stated.
The Ga Mantse, who also underscored the importance of safeguarding peace, pledged to support the 2025 edition of the tournament by purchasing 1,000 tickets for fans to attend the much-anticipated clash between Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics on September 5 at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The Democracy Cup was launched by Parliament last year to mark Ghana’s democratic gains. Asante Kotoko won the inaugural edition after beating Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium.
