Head coach of Sudan, James Kwesi Appiah, has expressed disappointment after his side’s failure to take their chances in the semifinal of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where they fell 1-0 to Madagascar.
The Ghanaian trainer saw his team bow out of the tournament designed exclusively for home-based players across Africa.
A dramatic extra-time winner from Toky Niaina in the 116th minute sealed Madagascar’s passage to the final, where they will face Morocco.
Sudan, who will now contest for bronze against Senegal on Friday, August 29, were left to reflect on what might have been.
Appiah admitted his side could not make their dominance count, while crediting the resilience of their opponents.
“I think that tactically, the second half was not on our side. In a football match, the winning team should not waste the only opportunity it gets to score.
"Our opponents, Madagascar, played well, and with only 10 players, they were good,” Appiah told CAF after the match.
The coach further highlighted the challenges facing Sudanese football, noting that the domestic league has been inactive for more than two years due to civil war.
“This is a building process⦠If things stabilize and the local league resumes, things might improve,” he added.
