German-born Ghanaian forward Ilyas Ansah announced himself on the biggest stage in style, scoring twice on his Bundesliga debut to inspire Union Berlin to a 2-1 home victory over VfB Stuttgart in the opening fixture of the 2025/26 season.
The 20-year-old striker, who completed a â¬4 million move from SC Paderborn this summer, wasted no time in winning the hearts of the Union faithful at the Alte Foersterei Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Ansah opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a composed finish before doubling his tally with a superb volley on the stroke of halftime after latching onto a pass from Andrej Ilic.
Stuttgart mounted a late fightback in the second half and pulled one back through Tiago Tomas in the 86th minute.
Deep into stoppage time, Bayern Munich target Nick Woltemade thought he had rescued a point for the visitors, but his strike was overturned following a VAR review, handing Union a perfect start to their campaign.
Ansah’s dream debut underlines his immense potential and the high expectations surrounding his arrival in Berlin.
Born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, the talented youngster has represented Germany at U20 level but remains eligible to play for Ghana at the senior international stage.
