The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will have strong representation at the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025, with four referees and eight assistant referees appointed to officiate at the global youth tournament.
South Africa’s Jelly Chavani headlines the list of African referees, joined by Hamza El Fariq of Morocco, Tanguy Mebiame of Gabon, and Abdou Abdel Mefire of Cameroon.
Their selection highlights the growing confidence FIFA has in the quality of African match officials, who continue to excel on the international stage.
They will be supported by assistant referees from across the continent, including Sirak Samuel Mengis (Eritrea), Hamandi Said Ally (Tanzania), Hamza Naciri (Morocco), Ahmed Dhouiouhi (Tunisia), Salim Alao (Benin), Amos Abegine Ndong B. (Gabon), Elyeh Robleh Dirir (Djibouti), and Joel Wonka Doe (Liberia).
The diverse spread of appointments - from North, West, East, Central, and Southern Africa - reflects CAF’s efforts to develop elite referees capable of performing at the highest level.
For the officials, Qatar 2025 offers a global platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience as they target future assignments at senior FIFA competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.
CAF’s refereeing department will view this as another positive step in its mission to elevate African referees onto the world stage.
