Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo says his display at Anfield will remain one of the most unforgettable moments of his career â not only for the goals he scored but for the unity shown across the football world in the face of adversity.
The 25-year-old was subjected to racial abuse during the first half of AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League opener against Liverpool on Friday, forcing a temporary halt to proceedings.
Despite the incident, Semenyo responded on the pitch with a brace, though the Cherries eventually fell 4-2 to Arne Slot’s side.
“Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever â not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,” Semenyo wrote on social media.
He expressed appreciation to his Bournemouth teammates, Liverpool players and fans for their support, and also commended Premier League officials for their handling of the matter.
“Football showed its best side when it mattered most,” he added.
Reflecting on his goals, Semenyo said they represented the unifying spirit of the game.
“This is why I play â for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be.”
The Black Stars forward also acknowledged the overwhelming messages of solidarity he has received, saying they reinforce his love for football.
Semenyo, widely regarded as Bournemouth’s standout performer at Anfield, will now look to build on his strong start when the Cherries welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Vitality Stadium next weekend.
