The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, led a solemn delegation from the football fraternity to pay their final respects to eight distinguished Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash.
The state funeral, held at the Independence Square in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025, brought together a cross-section of the nation in a moving display of unity and mourning.
President John Dramani Mahama, Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, senior government officials, members of the security services, traditional leaders and representatives from various professional bodies all gathered to honour the memory of the fallen.
President Simeon-Okraku was joined by General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, senior GFA executives, staff members and officials from football clubs across the country.
The tribute at Independence Square was not the first from the football leadership. On Thursday, August 14, 2025, the GFA President had led the Executive Council, FA staff and selected club officials to lay a wreath at the gardens of the Jubilee House, the seat of government, in honour of the victims. That private, dignified act served as an early expression of the association’s commitment to standing with the nation in remembrance.
The tragic helicopter crash, which claimed these eight lives, remains one of the darkest chapters in recent Ghanaian history. Beyond their professional achievements, the victims were remembered for their dedication, service and personal impact on the lives of many.
