Ghana Football Association (GFA) General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, has explained why Nsoatreman FC was eligible to attend and vote at the Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress, despite withdrawing from last season’s league over security concerns.
The club pulled out of the Ghana Premier League after the Nana Pooley incident, in which a fan was stabbed to death during a match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko. Following the tragedy, the club cited threats to its safety and informed the GFA of its decision to withdraw from all competitions. As a result, opponents were awarded three points and three goals as Nsoatreman were relegated.
Speaking to Ghanasportspage.com, Addo stressed that the club still holds membership in the GFA and, like all teams that featured in the previous Premier League season, had the right to be part of Congress.
“Congress is always attended by all the clubs that played in the season,” he said. “This includes teams that were relegated, as it is their final congress before officially becoming Division One clubs.”
Addo confirmed that all three relegated clubs, Nsoatreman, Accra Lions, and Legon Cities, participated in this year’s Congress as Premier League representatives. Next season, Accra Lions and Legon Cities will attend as Division One League members, while Nsoatreman, having been demoted further to the lower leagues, will not be part of the 2025 Congress.
The club’s future remains uncertain, with most players reportedly released and a possible disbandment indicated in its letter to the GFA. Addo added that this arrangement is consistent across other competitions, citing examples from the Women’s Premier League and Division One League.
