
The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, on Thursday, August 14, led members of the Executive Council to lay a wreath in memory of the eight Ghanaians who died in the tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.
The Ghana FA delegation included some staff of the association and club officials.
The solemn ceremony took place at the gardens of the Jubilee House, the seat of government.
Paying tribute to the eight deceased, President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku described them as heroes who died in the line of national duty, stressing that their memory will always be cherished.
“On behalf of the Football Association and the football community, we express our sincere condolences to the President of our Republic, the Government, the people of Ghana, and the families of the eight outstanding departed Ghanaians. We join a grieving nation in mourning. We fondly remember Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who served sports and football diligently as a Deputy Minister of Sports. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Their memory will forever be cherished,” he said.
The GFA President will lead the football family to the state funeral of the departed souls on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square.
The people who died from the helicopter crash include Defence Minister, who also served as former Deputy Sports Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, deputy national security coordinator, and Samuel Sarpong, vice chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.
Squadron leader Peter Bafemi Anala, flying officer Malin Twum-Ampadu and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah, who were the helicopter’s crew, also died.
