Slovan Bratislava fell 1-0 to Kairat Almaty in their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first-leg clash, with Ghanaian midfielder Rahim Ibrahim sent off in the second half.
On a hot Wednesday afternoon in Kazakhstan, Rahim started brightly, covering ground and linking play from midfield. But the game turned tense after the break. In the 65th minute, the 24-year-old received a second yellow card for a late challenge, leaving his side with ten men for the final stretch.
Despite being a first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Kairat pressed with intent. Their efforts paid off deep into stoppage time when Dastan Satpaev calmly converted a penalty in the 90th minute to give the home side a slim advantage ahead of the return leg.
Slovan, who struggled to create chances with just one shot on target, must now regroup quickly. They face Komarno in the Slovakian league on August 9 before hosting Kairat for the second leg.
Kairat, meanwhile, head into their domestic clash against Zhenis with momentum and belief.
