GFA approves Standard Player Contract to take effect from 2025/26 Season
The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has approved the GFA Standard Player Contract (GSPC), which will come into force from the 2025/26 football season across the Ghana Premier League, Malta Guinness Womens Premier League, and the Access Bank Division One League. The newly approved contract follows years of collaborative drafting between the GFA, its member clubs, and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG). The final version reflects wide-ranging input from stakeholders, with the option for continued revision in future seasons. The GSPC aims to protect player welfare, ensure minimum employment standards, and reduce contractual disputes by introducing a unified agreement for all professional footballers in the country. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of both players and clubs, codifying essential areas such as compensation, player conduct, medical support, and contract termination.Key features include fixed start and end dates aligned with the local transfer windows, detailed provisions on salaries and benefits, dispute resolution mechanisms referencing the GFA Players' Status Committee, and clauses on insurance, confidentiality, and image rights. There will be a transitional period during which existing contracts will be honoured, but new player signings must use the GSPC template. Copies of the standard agreement will be circulated to all clubs in the coming weeks. The move is part of the GFAs broader commitment to professionalising the domestic game and aligning with global standards in football governance and player protection.
